GWRE Newsletter Alaska Awaits Governor's Signature on Community Solar Legislation Alaska is on the brink of a renewable energy breakthrough with Senate Bill 152, “Saving Alaskans Money with Voluntary Community Energy.” Recently passed by the State Legislature, this bill now awaits Governor Dunleavy’s signature. SB 152 will enable Alaskans to subscribe to community-owned solar arrays, providing clean energy access to over 260,000 renters and 79,000 low-income residents. Community solar allows multiple customers to share local solar facilities, receiving credits on their electricity bills for their share of the power. This model provides equal access to solar energy benefits, potentially saving subscribers 10 to 20% on their monthly bills. Bipartisan Support and Federal Funding Backed by bipartisan support from legislators including Senators Bill Wielechowski, Forrest Dunbar, Elvi Gray-Jackson, and others, this bill aligns with a recent $62.5 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support solar projects across Alaska, particularly for low-income communities. Empowering Alaskans with Community Solar Support and Benefits Phil Wight from the Alaska Public Interest Research Group lauded the bill, stating it diversifies energy sources and provides significant consumer savings. Kevin Cray from the Coalition for Community Solar Access highlighted that community solar offers a unique opportunity for Alaskans to participate in the clean energy economy. Addressing Energy Concerns Facing the Cook Inlet natural gas crisis, Alaska needs renewable energy diversification. Community solar will help build a resilient electric grid and aligns with the majority of Alaskans' support for solar energy development. Chantal de Alcuaz from The Alaska Center emphasized that all Alaskans on the Railbelt will soon benefit from low-cost renewable power, promoting a more equitable energy environment. A Growing Trend States supporting community solar have increased from a few to 22, including Washington, D.C. Wood Mackenzie predicts that the US will have 14 GWDC of community solar power installed by 2028. Stay updated on this initiative and learn more about the benefits of community solar by visiting the Alaska Energy Authority’s website. Together, we can create a sustainable and equitable energy future for all. www.green-force.co SOURCE: CCSA Green World Renewable Energy Clean, Safe, Renewable
